|Clinical Genetics Unit
The Dr. R. Brian Lowry Clinical Genetics Unit, staffed by members of the Department as well as by Genetic Counsellors, provides a wide range of genetic services to the population of Southern Alberta. Provincially funded, this Genetics Unit has four full-time academic Clinical Geneticists and a full-time Metabolic Physician. In addition there is a Neurogeneticist, a Rheumatologist with expertise in connective tissue disorders, and a Cancer Geneticist. The Unit is located at the Alberta Children’s Hospital in Calgary; the Region’s only tertiary care pediatric site. The new Alberta Children’s Hospital opened in Calgary in 2006, locating the Unit in a world-class pediatric teaching and research facility. The Unit has significant strengths in prenatal diagnosis, dysmorphology, neurogenetics, as well as in the diagnosis and treatment of inborn errors of metabolism. An active outreach program has always been an integral part of the program and we continue to provide on-site consultative services in Lethbridge, Medicine Hat and Red Deer. The clinic is accredited for both service and clinical training by the Canadian College of Medical Genetics (CCMG).
In addition to its clinical activities, the Unit has the only Royal College Training Program in Medical Genetics in the Province of Alberta click here. Consistent with its tertiary care mandate, the Unit also has an active and diverse research program.
The goal of Clinical Genetics is to help families with genetic disorders live and reproduce as normally as possible. The emphasis is therefore placed not only on the diagnosis and treatment of genetic disorders but also on helping individuals and families understand the natural history of their disorder, how it is passed on within families as well as the options available for treatment and family planning. In part driven by the recent success of the Human Genome Project, the demand for genetic counselling services continues to increase as does the scope and breadth of the services that can be offered.
